Anika Nilles (born May 29, 1983, in Aschaffenburg, Germany) is a highly acclaimed drummer, composer, and educator who rose to prominence through her viral YouTube videos in the early 2010s, showcasing extraordinary technique, groove, and musicality.
Coming from a family of drummers, she began playing at age six and later studied popular music and music business at the Popakademie Baden-Württemberg. Before going full-time as a musician, she worked as a preschool teacher after studying social work.
Influences include Jeff Porcaro (Toto), Carter Beauford (Dave Matthews Band), Jojo Mayer, Stanton Moore, Prince, and others. Her style blends precision, fusion elements, and powerful pocket playing — earning her millions of views and collaborations.
In 2022 she toured with guitar legend Jeff Beck. In October 2025, she was announced as Rush's touring drummer for the 2026 "Fifty Something" reunion tour — stepping into the role following Neil Peart's passing in 2020. Geddy Lee and Alex Lifeson praised her chops after recommendations and YouTube discovery, marking her as the "newest new guy" in the band's live lineup.
Anika released albums with her band Nevell (Pikalar 2017, For a Colorful Soul 2020, False Truth 2025) and continues to inspire drummers worldwide through clinics, lessons, and performances.
