Geddy Lee (born Gershon Sonenfeld Lee, July 29, 1953) is the founding bassist, lead vocalist, and keyboardist of Rush — the band's high-pitched voice and intricate bass lines are instantly recognizable signatures of their sound.
As one of only three consistent members throughout Rush's history (alongside Alex Lifeson), Geddy co-wrote most lyrics with Neil Peart and handled much of the melodic and rhythmic foundation. His bass style blends technical precision (fast runs, odd time signatures) with melodic phrasing, often using Rickenbacker, Fender Jazz, and custom basses.
Fun fact: The nickname "Dirk" came from early band days — a playful jab at his resemblance to Dirk the Daring from the cartoon Dragon's Lair (or possibly a misheard "Geddy" → "Dirk" in drunken banter). It stuck as an inside joke among fans and bandmates.
Beyond Rush, Geddy released the massive coffee-table book Geddy Lee's Big Beautiful Book of Bass (2019) and his memoir My Effin' Life (2023). He received the Order of Canada (1996) and Rock & Roll Hall of Fame induction with Rush (2013).
