Alex Lifeson

Alex Lifeson (born Aleksandar Živojinović, August 27, 1953) is the founding guitarist of Rush — the only member to appear on every album and remain throughout the band's entire history.

Known for his innovative riffing, atmospheric effects, complex chord structures, and "musical scientist" approach to gear and sound design, Alex blended hard rock, progressive elements, and acoustic textures into Rush's signature style.

He plays electric & acoustic guitars, plus mandola, mandolin, bouzouki, and more. Ranked among the greatest guitarists, he co-founded Rush in 1968 and helped shape its evolution from early hard rock to progressive epics and later melodic phases.

Fun fact: His nickname "Lerxst" originated from an exaggerated pronunciation of "Alex" ("A-lerxt") — often in band banter or Geddy's mom's accent — and later inspired his signature amps and guitars.

Beyond music, Alex is a painter, licensed pilot, golfer, and appeared in cameos such as Trailer Park Boys. With Rush, he received the Order of Canada in 1996 and induction into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame in 2013.
